Calling all Social Studies Teacher 2 Years, 10 Months ago
Fellow Educators,

I have a good list of Civil War internet sites that I use for my class. What I am looking for (and have not yet found) is a site that has quotes of participants in a variety of battles. Bull Run, Wilson's Creek, Shiloh etc. My students in my Civil War class love to talk battles but I would like to have a source for them to learn from at home. I have plenty of books but I don't like to loan out my stuff.

Do any of you have a site that you use?

Thanks!

Sorry Holler. I don't have anything like that, but such a source would be very useful. Let me know if you find anything.

holler,

My history teacher has a series of books that are filled with primary source information including First hand accounts. I will try to get a name.
It might be worth having each of your students find a diary in the Libary and list 5 Significant passages. They might get dupped into reading the whole thing.

Try www.cwc.lsu.edu/ It has a lot of cool stuff.

Also for late war Petersburg quotes try: www.nature.nps.gov/views/Classic/Sites/PETE/ET_PETE_Index.htm

Hope this helps,

Rod, by chance are those the paperback books on the battles of Franklin, Stones River, etc?

The above link doesn't work. http://www.civilwarhome.com/links12.htm#Quotes

Holler, I'll have to have Jason look them up tonight since they're back at home. They're relatively inexpensive, maybe $10 a book (the author signed mine when I got them for Christmas ). Anyway, they provide qoutes from before, during, and after the battles using letters, diaries, and regt. histories for the sources.

Hope this helps.

Don't know if you've used this, but I've always like the Valley of the Shadow project by the University of Virginia - it tracks two communities, one North, one South, from John Brown's Raid through Reconstruction - using letters and documents.

http://valley.vcdh.virginia.edu/

Also a nice little page of letters is the Images of Battle online exhibit from the Southern Historical Collection at the University of North Carolina:

http://www.lib.unc.edu/mss/exhibits/civilwar/index.html

Of course, both of these resources have a decidely eastern slant in their materials and subjects.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Thanks for the replies. I had seen most of these. The Valley site I went to the Univeristy of Richmond last summer with the creator Ed Ayers. He is a really cool guy! I learned a lot about that area.

Thanks for the links! I have thirty students in my Civil War class. I have 60 days to go over the whole war. Of course I spend twenty on Wilson's Creek, 20 on Shiloh, ten on the western theatre, nine on Iowa and one day on the eastern theatre. I am kidding!
Remember boys my great-great grandfather was in the 10th NJ. Still waiting to portray that regiment.

I think it would be fun if all of us teachers could get together to talk lesson plans.
Take care!

You mean your Western Theater state doesn't require you to teach President Davis, Gen Lee, and Gen "Stonewall"? That's right, my students in Atlanta need to know three CS figures, and the state picked three that didn't give two hoots nor have any connection to this state until their image was carved on a mountain visible from many of my students' homes.

No, we only talk about men who are NOT traitors!

The class I teach is an elective. I currently have thirty students in my class. 28 guys two ladies.

At this present time we do not have to teach to a end of the year test. But thanks to a host of politicians on both sides we are heading down that road.
