Ancestors 3 Years, 3 Months ago
Hey all - just something for fun.
Did you have an ancestor that fought in the War Between The States?
I will start the ball:
My great-great-uncle was August Buss (Dutchie) who fought with the
6th Wis., Co. H. He was drafted in '64, so missed Antietam and
Gettysburg, but saw some of the blood with Grant in the East.
My wife found pictures of August from after the War, he looks like
a nice guy. Big full beard.

Next? Scott, I know you probably have relatives in the War.
See you all soon.

Your comrade, Jim Schumann

PS - talked to Poague this past weekend, he seems much improved.
He said he called other fellers as well, I think he is getting bored,
that is a good sign of healing!

My great-great grandfather was with the 10th New Jersey. Was wounded right before the battle of Cold Harbor. WOunded in the thigh and lower leg. He carried one of the balls to his death. He returned to the regiement in time for the end of Petersburg. moved to Iowa around 1870. Buried here in Iowa City.

Had a great-great-great grandfather in the 4th Iowa Cav. Tried to get into the 17th Iowa but was to small and was rejected.

Had two Great-great-great uncles (they were twins) that were with the 17th Iowa. They were captured and sent to a little place called Andersonville.

Had a great-great-great grandfather that was in the US Navy. I don't know much about him. He is buried not to far from my house.

I also had another grandfather that lived in southern Iowa that opposed the war. Story goes some pro-Union men were coming to get him. He and his sons were waiting with weapons to attack but his daughter went to the door and scared off the would be attackers. I also had been told that he hired a subsitute during the war.

PS: Carl, as a Frog myself I should probably take offense to you referring to the Frogs as Frogs. However I guess since my Frog Ancestors had already been hopping around the new world for around 150 years by the time of the Franco-Prussian War so I guess by that time they were probably more mutt than frog and at this point I am mostly mutt so I guess I will have to let it slide by.

As far as I know, my ancestors all missed the 'fun' of the Civil War.

I believe I did have a few Germanic fore bearers who were oppressed by one of the Barons in the von Schumannburg lineage.

Hi gents,

Just like Mr. Schumann, I had a great, great, great uncle in Company B, 6th Wisconsin starting in October of 1864 - Adam Mersch.

Last is another great, great, great uncle in Company A, 27th Michigan starting in August 1862 - Frederick Prince.

As other gents, most of my other relatives were still over in Germany giving the Kaiser some fits.

Greetings all

My ggg grandfather, George Reynolds, was in the 3rd Wis. Cav. Co. M. He was from Boscobel and is buried in the cemetery across the street from the park were Boscobel holds its reenactment. Im fortunate to have a copy of a picture of him but I do not know what happened to the original.

The 3rd spent its time in Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and the Indian Territory. One interesting tidbit about the 3rd is that the band was massacred, burned alive and mutilated by some of Quantrills men in Baxter Springs Kansas in 1863. I guess they wont be putting the band back together.

Great Grandfather: Jonathan Barker, 8th WI Light Artillery Battery: 11/1861 mustered out 1/1865. Battery started out in Kansas of all places, moved to Army of Cumberland saw action at Perryville, Stones River, Tullahoma campaign, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, (cited for bravery on Missionary Ridge) March to the Sea, Savannah and then mustered out.

His brother William was in the 10th WI Infantry, Army of Cumberland. Saw action in similar Cumberland campaigns: Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga. Was wounded at Chickamauga and died from wounds about 2 weeks later somewhere around Atlanta while on his way south to that place known as Andersonville. The 10th was on the far left end at the Kelly field and was told by Thomas to act as part of the rear guard that protected the Army while he extracted the rest to Snodgrass Hill. The 10th was surrounded, most of the surviving regiment was captured and many of them died in Andersonville. The remaining 10th was merged with the 1st WI and 21st WI Infantry.

Both gentleman are buried about 2 miles from my home in Neenah, WI

Re:Ancestors 3 Years, 2 Months ago
I have three possible ancestors who served in Wisconsin regiments during the Civil War. The only one I have confirmed is Private John Reichel, Company C, 43rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. He was from Jefferson, WI and enlisted on August 26, 1864. He served in the garrison of Johnsonville, TN (on the TN River). This was an important depot of supplies and was the terminus of the military railroad from Nashville. He participated in the Battle of Johnsonville on November 4, 1864 (his regiment had 1 KIA and 1 WIA). Within a month the regiment had moved to other garrison sites in Tennessee and was part of the army of occupation until they were mustered out of service on June 24, 1865.

I had my greatgrandfather on my mother's side Cpl Arnold Rader) fought in Co C, 46th Illinois. Army of the Tennessee. My greatgrandfather on my dad's side (pvt. At the second day of Shiloh, they were fighting about 1/4 mile apart, near Wolves Field. Pvt John Wedeward got wounded at Chickamagua and cpl Arnold Rader got wounded at Shiloh.

My 5th greatgrand father, on my mother's mother's side Brigadier General John Fellows) lead the 21st Continental under George Washington. He fought at the Seige of Boston, the Battles for New York (Long Island and White Plains), Princton and Trenton. Then led Mass. troops in 1877 under Heratio Gates at the Battle of Saratoga.

I had a great cousin fight in the German Army (Weirmark) in WWII. He was killed at the Russian Front. My dad fought in WWII also. In the US Navy.
