Camp Randall 5 Years, 8 Months ago
It's Sunday morning and I'm about to unload my truck of my Camp Randall gear. A large time.

Thanks Tom for organizing an excellent event. Saturday's drills were tight and informative. When the ONV goes into the field we'll be proficient in just about any drill thrown at us.

The public was amazing for their knowledge of the CW and desire to learn from us.

A special thanks to the guys who put on the Confederate uniforms for the prisoner presentations. Dan, Dan, Andy and Terry, you all did an excellent job bringing the research to life for the public.

See you all in the field,
Steve Acker

Hi everyone,

I wanted to thank all of those whom supported the ONV Camp Randall LH this weekend. You gents handled everything very well and the many changes in impression made for an event that did not get stale for sure. Special thanks to all the officers & nco’s, our fine display of Confederates, and most importantly the private in the ranks whom attended this event. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes and I wanted to highlight some fine efforts to make this event happen.

Thanks to Steve Acker whom coordinated the outstanding Confederate POW scenarios with all his research and to Dave Frohmader who was the steady voice of the 19th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry to pubic for this presentation as well. Steve Acker, Terry Sorchy, Andy Ackeret, Dan Chlemar, and David Cortez, thanks for your portrayals of the prisoners of war. This was an excellent presentation that the public enjoyed learning about the Confederate Prisoners of War at Camp Randall in the spring of 1862.

To Dave Gerow, Brad Argue, Scott Frank, John Wedeward, Dave Frohmader, Dave May, Rich Propp, and Terry Sorchy, thanks for bringing your talents in the officer and nco positions for the event. It was a pleasure to serve with all of you. We juggled over three different manuals during the weekend and I thought we did pretty well. You all brought a seriousness to each portrayal and attempted to honor the fine men of the 19th Wisconsin, the 12th Wisconsin, and the 7th Wisconsin Infantry. Special thanks to Dave Gerow for giving the history of 12th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry to the pubic. The Marching 12th would be proud and so would the original Hard Heads! I had a great time leading you in the 7th Wisconsin presentation and I hope you all enjoyed learning about the 7th with my short history as well. I know the public certainly left with a better appreciation of what all the units we depicted this event did.

For all those whom brought extra uniform and equipage to make the event a success, my thanks to you. The event could not happen without your efforts!

And last to the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, my thanks to Jeff Kollath and Bill Brewster for allowing us to be a Camp Randall. Bill and Jeff were very happy with the turnout and there is a good chance for future events with the ONV. In fact, we may have something to help out the WVM in early October in Madison. Details to come in the future.

For those whom could not attend, ask your mess mates and pards about the event and the great tour Bill Brewster gave all of us at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum. I think they will have some good stories to tell about some of the artifacts they were able to see.

Hope to see you all at Rich Mountain and please remember to register for Hold the Rails…at all Hazards,Galena, and the Park City Grays LH in Kenosha!

Yours in the Old Northwest Volunteers,

As I just got done talking to John Dewey, I told him I rated the event a 10 on a scale form 0-10. It was fun doing the differant Wisconsin units, the differant impressions (I still like the chance to wear my Wisconsin State Issued 5 button sack coat) and the differant manuals. I think the "built in time for issueing and cooking rations" was very beneficial to the public also.

My thanks to Tom Klass and the Vet Museum, led by Bill Brewster, setting up a quality event.

Will see everybody on Friday evening. Boy cannot wait for the 90+ degrees and high humidity for this weekend. (all we need now is the rap music)

Good pards, good weather, good impressions... what more could a guy ask for?

Big kudos to Tom, Dave and the NCOs for doing a bully job of keeping the boys busy. Also a big thank you to Bill Brewster for the two-hour tour at the Vet's Museum afterward.

I look forward to another opportunity to do this in the future.

Hi gents,

I know this is an old event AAR, but I just learned that an article I interviewed for actually is still on the Web courtsey of UW-Madison.

For those that were in attendance or for our ONV bretheren that do know me pretty well, you will get a chuckle out of this article.

Also this is a great notice that we indeed will have a substantial donation made to the Wisconsin Veterans Museum on behalf of the Fox Lake Preservation March & LH. All participants and supporters whom could not attend should be very proud of your efforts. Scott Frank will be posting soon on our donations.

Thanks gents and have a great Memorial Day,

Tom
