Dear ONV,

For the last two weeks I have been in the process of planning an event for 2010. As of now we have the weekends nailed down to the 1st and 2nd weekends in May.

For now we are doing the Entrenchment of 64. This will be around the 3 days of Cold Harbor.

We will be building the earthworks this fall of 09, we want to know if there is any interest to make a date to have people come in and help?

The land we will be using is all private in Fulton county Illinois. The closest town is Avon. THe land consist of small hills and streams with one large hill that we will be building the works on. There is a small river at the base of the hill.

The federal company will be capped at 50 men. We are looking for a full scale art. peice for us to man. We are also wanting to get a small detail of fed. cav. to use. Mark Hidlebaugh will be the fed. officer. We will be portraying the 89th Ill. Co. A Out of Fulton county.

The confederate company will be capped at 40 men. We already have a group bringing in 2 full scale guns to use in the works. Mike Comer will be putting the Confederate company together. This group will be portraying the 17th Mississippi.

I'm asking the ONV to put the federal company together... Is there any problem with this happening?

Hey DD,
It sounds very interesting, and I hope we can get behind this event. You will need to come to the winter meeting this year to bring it before the ONV for a vote. This is great, two authentic immersion events held close to home here in the Mid West. (Not to mention the events at Sugar Bush; that makes 4. I guess) Seems this is what the ONV was striving for when formed.

I am looking forward to see what people have to say. Its going to be a great chance to get those far west boys and those southern boys to come up.

I would like to see if there is any other intrest in this event by the ONV.

Interest, no doubt. But definately bring it up at the annual meeting in Dec.

Keep talking to your site host about when is it best for him to dig some trenches.

I seriously can't wait to sit on my arse all weekend in a trench. Sheer boredom has been missing from all the events I've been at. (I know I missed Vicksburg...)

I think there will be a strong interest in this event, can't speak for anyone else but I'm interested. We don't get a chance to work with art. very much. Do you have a lead on a full scale piece for the feds?

I'd really like to see a Petersburg event of life in the treches even if the Burg wasn't until June onward.

Occasional counter battery fire, boredom, sharpshooters, more boredom, maybe toss in a few rats to roam the trenches...

WE decided to do Cold Harbor because it would make more sence for the lay out of the land.. we already have the Rt for the federals done. They will be on the move about 2 miles before they reach the place of intrest...

Cold Harbor was faught on 3 days.. witch roughly equeals a weekend...

Great event idea and one that fits a theme for an event I just posted on. Entrenching is an aspect of the war we do not get the chance to work on and we need to for after the stand up fights of the early war, the shovel was a soldier's best friend.

How far is Avon from Milwaukee and when are you looking at doing the trench work? If possible, I would love to come down and help. Will the digging be done in kit or modern?

You are about four and a half hours from Avon. Avon is 25 miles south of Galesburg Il.

My plan is to set 2 weekends in the fall to do the digging. one weekend will be with a backhoe and the next weekend will be a chance to come in with period clothing where the details will be put in.

Right now with the event I am organizing a federal company of ppssible Pioneers and Mark Hidlebaugh is putting together an infrantry company.

We have a possible Confederate company with the help of 2 full scale guns.

I wanna maybe be make 2 small confed companys.

I've started to get word out to those that might come up to be Confederate. I think we'll be able to field a decent company to man that trench.

Not to spoil anything for this event but the event organizers have a lot of great ideas for this event.

I hope we can get as many like minded individuals to the mid-west as we can...
